I'm not so sure he can.

The FR-S is really a Subaru product developed using Toyota's money, rather than being a Toyota product. They've been saying for some time that they are going to build a new Supra, but that's gotten precisely nowhere. The LF-A was really a technology demonstrator, intended to show technologies and ideas that were meant to show up in production cars, but haven't ten years later.

The best they have right now is the IS, and considering that it's only just a match for its competitors, I don't have any particular faith that Toyota can one-up the Mustang any time soon.

Hey man, don't hate on Debbie. She was fun. Hate on Akio Toyoda instead, who promised that he would make Toyota develop enthusiast-oriented cars, but hasn't been able to do so outside of throwing money at someone else to do it.

They have something a bit more important on their hands, like getting prepared for when the oil will run out.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, isn't the RC, like a modern day, more upscale Supra?

You know what? I'd like to see them try. All of Toyota's hemming and hawing about a new Supra for the past 10+ years has made me weary. I'd like to see them put their money where their collective mouth is.

Right. Because Toyota has been on the forefront electric car development since, like, forever. Oh, and because they developed the most advance pure electric and assisted electric cars on the market. Except that they haven't. The have a capable a very well-refined hybrid platform that they've made impressive efforts to adapt, but the idea itself is trumped by the the idea behind the Volt and the Model S.

The RC is based on the IS, which, again, is competitive in its niche, but that's not the niche the Mustang competes in. Aston Martins are dynamically great, too, but they compete in an altogether different niche than the Mustang, as does the RC.

I'm gonna have to disagree with pretty much most of this. Subaru never would have built the BRZ if Toyota hadn't come to them with the proposal, and therefore I attribute the existence of both the BRZ and GT-86/FR-S to Toyota. Subaru did most of the development, but the actual spearheading of the project came from Toyota. Toyota is also currently collaborating with BMW and it has been said that a new car will be produced from this relationship, and it has been strongly suggested that it is going to be the new Supra. I still have a lot of faith in Toyota. I don't know that they will have a Mustang competitor anytime soon, but it depends on how you look at it. The 2015 Mustang in any performance version (i.e. the eco-boost 4cyl or the V8) is certain to be quite a bit more than a FR-S, granted it will have significantly more power. If Toyota would put out a factory turboed and tuned FR-S, we'd likely see a very strong competition with the eco-boost Stang. We will have to wait and see if the Mustang can out handle the FR-S, since that is it's largest selling point.

All that being said, an Eco-Boost 2015 Mustang is starting to sound very very tempting. lol

None of that changes the fact that Toyota has been utterly incapable of producing a sporting vehicle since the death of the Celica in 2006. Toyota didn't spearhead the development at all; Subaru did. Toyota simply approached them and said, "If you do this for us, we'll pay for it." That's the definition of outsourcing. Toyota seems to be doing so again with BMW.

I have faith that Toyota can fork over enough cash to a competent company to allow them to put Toyota badges on enthusiast-oriented cars. I don't have faith in Toyota's capacity to actually develop enthusiast-oriented cars themselves any more.

They can't. It would greatly exceed their corporate standards for blandness...

It's not that they are not capable, but they won't. Their engineers are certainly have the knowledge, but Toyota's corporate culture will not allow it.
